Wake Up! You Need That Sleep!

From our friends at Black College Wire:

Wake Up! You Need That Sleep!
By Lydia West , Black College Wire

Between class, work, parties and school activities, many students find it difficult to take the time to re-energize body and brain with the real food for the soul, sleep. This condition can become particularly aggravated at this time of year, heading into a home stretch of preparing finals, scrambling for summer jobs and internship, trying to focus on study through spring fever, bringing extracurricular activities and for some, suffering through senior-itis.

But for young people, failure to get in at least eight hours can result in dizziness, loss of energy and insomnia — all symptoms of sleep deprivation, says the author, a student at Albany State University who writes for the Student Voice.

Her research offers more good tips for getting re-energized from the National Sleep Foundation and others. Don't crash during finals. Check it out at BCWire.

Annual Summer Gigs Feature @ IMDiversity

Feature of Interest at our sister-site, IMDiversity.com:

IMDiversity has updated its special seasonal section dedicated to providing job outlook information and featured opportunities for recent graduates and other entry-level jobseekers. The feature also includes featured internships and other summer opportunities.

The one-month feature is the perfect thing for student procrastinators who have not yet nailed down an internship or summer job (you know who you are -- but we're sure you have a good reason for getting started late), or for those about to graduate still looking for their first job.

As we've advised many times in the past, if you don't have a job by graduation, you must not let it get you down. Now is the time to breathe, reassess your strategies, zero in on what needs work (your resume? your interview presentation skills?), and get back to work. There are still opportunities out there starting this summer. Visit the Summer Gigs 2007 section now.

Added: Alphas in Iraq

Newly posted, extended feature by Kathy Taylor Dejoie, Editor of the IMDiversity.com African American Village, with LTC Ivery Taylor:

In an extended feature from our February edition THE BLACK COLLEGIAN, Alphas in Iraq features the stories of several soldiers currently stationed in Iraq. Bound as members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, these men have found friendship and a vital support network to sustain them in the harsh warzone conditions. THE BLACK COLLEGIAN feature published excerpts from a number of the brothers describing in their own words what life is like and what the war means to them.

These soldiers of the 13th Sustainment Command provide logistical support to many thousands of troops, and their stories convey movingly how even the simplest things -- from Sunday dinners to music nights -- help them stay focused on their mission amidst intense pressure and longings for home and family.

Through the course of preparing the story, Dejoie wrote, she "gained a new level of respect and admiration for, not only these proud members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, but for all our soldiers serving in Iraq. Communicating with these men, some of whom are not much older than my own sons, shifted my view of them from 'soldiers on a mission' to sons, brothers, nephews, dads and cousins."

Hear them in their own words at Alphas in Iraq, and in the extended online-only feature at the African-American Village.
